Summer 2010 Public Program Schedule

The schooner Inland Seas sails from Suttons Bay unless otherwise noted. Please arrive one half hour before the listed sailing time.

Family Ecology Sail (Ages 5 and up; $40/person, $35/children under 18)
A unique hands-on experience for the entire family. Learn more about the Great Lakes ecosystem by trawling for fish, collecting plankton, sampling the lake bottom, and completing water quality tests. Become part of the maritime sailing tradition by raising the anchor, hoisting the sails, and steering the schooner.

Gull Island Birding Cruise (Adults; $55/person)
Join birding experts as we take a close look at the ruins of Ustick Cottage and the gull and cormorant colonies on Gull Island. Due to the sensitive habitat of the island, we will not be going ashore.

June 12: 10:00am - 2:30pm, includes lunch.

Young Women in Science (High School; $300/person)
This overnight program is designed for women with an interest in aquatic sciences and environmental studies and will offer students the opportunity to engage in field studies while sailing aboard the schooner Inland Seas. This experience will foster a deepened interest in science and a commitment for the long-term stewardship of the Great Lakes.

June 24: 9:00am - June 25: 4:00pm, includes food and lodging aboard Inland Seas.

Maritime History Under Sail (Adults; $55/person)
Discover the rich maritime heritage of Suttons Bay. Sail the bay as in days of old, guided by the ship's crew and a guest faculty of local historians. This program honors the life work of Glaudia Goudschaal.

July 7: 6:00 - 9:00pm, includes a light dinner.

Explore Power Island (Ages 10 and up; $80/person, $75/children under 18)
A unique hands-on experience for the entire family. Learn more about the Great Lakes ecosystem by trawling for fish, collecting plankton, sampling the lake bottom, and completing water quality tests. Become part of the maritime sailing tradition by raising the anchor, hoisting the sails, and steering the schooner. Learn more about the geology and history of Grand Traverse Bay through a hike on Power Island. Dress for hiking and wear sturdy shoes.

July 13: 9:00am - 5:00pm, includes lunch. Sailing out of the Traverse City-Elmwood Township Marina.

Astronomy Under Sail (Adults; $45/person)
Leave the Inland Seas dock in Suttons Bay before sunset and sail away from the shore lights for a clear view of the night sky. Astronomer Dick Cookman will help you identify constellations and discuss the legends behind their names.
