Large Group Sampling

When the ship is safely anchored and weather observations are complete, the students are gathered amidship and the lead instructor will direct the students in collecting samples of bottom water, plankton, and sediment/benthos. The volunteer instructors and chaperones should stand or sit behind the students so the students can have eye contact with the lead instructor, who will direct the sampling activities. Students will be called upon to assist in the sampling as much as possible. While the lead instructor directs this portion of the Schoolship Program, the volunteer instructors are expected to remain on deck, since they have several responsibilities during this time.
